Take an overland ride in Kentucky over the land between the lakes! Shane is an Overland Bound friend, and the owner of one of the most awesome XTerras we have ever seen! Follow along the journey and learn what takes with him on his trips!
My girlfriend and I got together with a few other XTerra enthusiasts and took several ventures into the OHV park. We also camped for three days in an effort to test load plans, equipment, vehicle, and rations.
Here’s how I had my 04 XTerra configured for movement to LBL:
– Five gallon water can
– Five gallon fuel can
– One 35L Yeti (cold food and drinks), one 25L Yeti (beer),
– One 35L “Trasharoo” (green MOLLE backpack, which held LNT friendly trashbags and fire tinder)
– One 15’x10′ tarp
– One outboard FAK (orange Rotopax)
– One field table
– One Pelican case (which held dry food, accessories, dog food)
– Two field chairs
– Two thru-packs (each holding our clothes, tent, misc camping gear)
– One oil bag
– Two day packs with camelbaks
– One stack of fire wood (orange waterproof bag)
Rack mounted configuration:
Onboard loadout (minus one thru-pack):
(I hope these videos work on here) The map said this is where the trail goes…..so here we go….literally on the lake lol.

Great rig. You planning on any bar-work? Looks like you had a lot of fun.
All sorts of awesome in this! Truck looks great, Shane…
You guys want an FJ guy to hang out with? This is my back yard. My house is in Bumpus Mills.
FJ’s are always welcome! I’m moving to Virginia later this month though, so if you ever make it to VA let me know, by then I’ll have some good spots to head into. There is an FJ & XTerra page on Facebook by the way.
Thank you!
Boobook Outdoors, what do you mean by bar-work? We had a great time and are in the planning stages of making Land Between the Lakes a routine event. Its a versatile area for everyone of all walks of life, but will definitely test your mettle in certain spots. Let me know if you have any other questions or comments!
Robert, thank you for the feedback. Wish you could have joined us!
Shane, bar-work is what we can bull bars, rear bars, rock sliders, and brush bars. Any external protection around the vehicle really falls into the bar-work category.
Ahhh okay! I have P&P Engineering Level II rock sliders, but no other work yet. I’m planning on getting a significantly better steel front bumper which will not only protect but also give the truck a lot more approach clearance. Nissan did a good job with the OE bumper, but I also want to safely and securely mount a winch up front.
Nice,,, we’ll have to give that trip a whirr on our way west next early spring.. Is it open year round?
It is. And its well worth the detour!
Pretty cool to see!! My buddy Drew & I actually went up and talked to Shane and his GF/Wife when camping at Prentice Cooper. Great to see you posted bud!
I was wondering when I’d see you on here! I wish we all could have hit the trails at PC, but we’re moving to Virginia later this month. So you and Drew are ever rolling through VA you’ll have to message me and we’ll hit the trails!
Shane oneil looks awesome man. We camped with you at prentice cooper one night. We were the first gen tundras! Glad to see you’re still building your x and enjoying it! We need to plan a trip some time!
Absolutely! And thanks fellas…..next time we link up, you’ll have to show us your rigs!
Looks like a great time!
LBL is always an amazing trip. The park is run very well by its staff and offers a lot of fun things to do. If you’re ever in vicinity of western Kentucky/Tennessee, you have to check it out.
Where in Kentucky did you go? I’m new to overlanding, I live in Kentucky and am looking for some trails.
Hey, McCutcheon. Me too. I live in Lexington and I’m surfing the web trying to find places in KY to overland. Haven’t found any yet, but maybe found another newbie to overlanding. Where do you live?
That place is awesome. We camped there for several nights at energy lake after the NASP nationals.
